To celebrate the importance of these special days, a big fair is organized at the temple in March/April and October/November.

A Kund (pond) is beside the temple, known as Sudhanva Kund or Mahisagar Tirtha. The center of the kund has a huge statue of lord Shiva. There is a Havan Kund and Yagyashala near the temple for performing Havan.

History of Chandrika Devi Temple

The exact beginning of this famous Hindu temple in Lucknow still needs to be discovered. However, the temple we see today was built around 300 years ago. The story goes that there used to be a dense forest where the temple now stands.

A person from Kathwara village had a dream about Chandrika Devi, inspiring them to build a temple there. Surprisingly, the idol of the main deity was found in a different village and later placed in the temple.

According to local stories, there are fascinating tales behind the Chandrika Devi Temple's beginnings. The founder of Lucknow, Shri Lakshmana's eldest son, once faced a difficult situation while traveling along the Gomti River with his horse, Ashwamegh.

Suddenly, the weather turned dark, and he found shelter in a dense forest. While there, he prayed sincerely to Chandrika Devi, asking for protection. Miraculously, the weather cleared, and the goddess appeared before him. Inspired by this divine encounter, the original Chandrika Devi Temple was built. Unfortunately, it was later destroyed by invaders in the 12th century.

Another captivating legend linked to this famous tourist spot in Lucknow takes us back to ancient times, known as the Dwapar Yug in Hindu mythology. It is believed that Lord Krishna shared knowledge with Barbeek, the son of Ghatotkacha, about a sacred place where he could gain great power. Barbeek visited this place and spent three consecutive years worshiping Goddess Chandrika, seeking immense strength and blessings.
