About Hussainabad Picture Gallery
The Hussainabad Picture Gallery has a rich and intriguing history intertwined with the city of Lucknow. This magnificent structure was originally constructed in 1838 during the reign of Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah, the third Nawab of Awadh.
Initially known as the ‘Baradari,’ which translates to ‘having 12 doorways,’ the building served as a summer house for Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah. It was an architectural marvel designed with exquisite craftsmanship and grandeur. The Baradari overlooked a serene pond and included a mosque within its premises.
During the Nawabi era, the front of the building was bustling with a market called ‘Mina Bazaar.’ It was a vibrant marketplace where various goods were traded. Additionally, the Baradari housed an inn and stables for elephants and horses, reflecting the opulent lifestyle of the Nawabs.
A distinguishing feature of the Hussainabad Picture Gallery is the incorporation of iron pillars in its upper-storey pavilion. It was a notable departure from traditional Nawabi architecture, making the building stand out.
Over time, the Baradari became the Hussainabad Picture Gallery, a significant cultural institution in Lucknow. The gallery began showcasing life-size portraits of the Nawabs of Awadh, which were painted between 1882 and 1885 by renowned European artists like Dawling, Gravet, and Harrison.
An Indian artist named D.S. Singh also contributed to this remarkable collection. These portraits depicted the Nawabs in their regal attire, providing a glimpse into that era's grand costumes and jewellery.
Apart from the Nawabs' portraits, the gallery also houses pictures of British administrators and officials from the colonial period, further adding to its historical significance.
