History of Sikandar Bagh, Lucknow
During the Indian Revolt of 1857, Sikandar Bagh played a significant role as a stronghold for the Indian troops during their attack on the British Residency in Lucknow. The battle there resulted in the loss of over two thousand lives. One incident stands out, showcasing the extraordinary bravery of the women soldiers under Begum Hazrat Mahal. An eyewitness named Sergeant William Forbes Mitchell described the scene vividly.
Within the garden, there stood a massive peepal tree, near which water jars were placed for the soldiers' refreshment. After a fierce encounter, Sergeant Mitchell noticed English soldiers' bodies scattered in one area. Upon examination, he realized that each soldier had been shot from above.
Suspecting someone was hiding in the tree, he ordered a soldier named Wallace to investigate. Wallace spotted a person and fired, causing the body to fall to the ground. To their great sorrow, they discovered it was a woman. Filled with remorse, Wallace uttered heartfelt words, expressing his regret, "If I had known it was a woman, I would rather have died a thousand deaths than have harmed her."
Although the identity of this brave woman remains unknown, a monument was built in her honour. Inside the park is a bust engraved with the name "unknown heroine," serving as a reminder of her supreme sacrifice and bravery.
Another fascinating fact associated with the monument is that a year after the storming of Sikandar Bagh, an Italian-British photographer named Felice Beato captured the recently damaged structure in a photograph. Viewing the photo allows us to imagine the intensity of the fighting there, adding to its charm as it provides a glimpse into a moment from almost two hundred years ago.
