The Ramakrishna Math at Nirlanagar is a spiritual hub that promotes the growth of social, spiritual, and religious endeavors following the worldwide ideals set forth by Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda.

The success of the Math in Lucknow serves as an example of the secular nature of the city, which Lucknowites acquired from the Nawabs of Awadh. Without going to the spiritually rich Ramakrishna Math, your journey to Lucknow is incomplete.

#Trivia: Math's main office is located in Belur Math, Kolkata, with more than 150 branches worldwide.

Architecture of Sri Ramakrishna Math in Lucknow

A popular spiritual destination in Lucknow, Sri Ramakrishna Math is a stunning marble structure surrounded by a verdant landscape.

The idols of Swami Vivekananda, Holy Mother Sarada Devi, and Ramakrishna are housed inside this famed Lucknow shrine. This well-known sacred site in Lucknow features stunning Mughal, Chandellas, Pallavas, Chalukya, and Jain patterns in its construction.

To give the temple an air of elegance, marble stone from the mines of Bundi and Makrana was specifically used in its construction. The white marble stone has been contrasted with red sandstone, a style later adopted by the Mughals, to accentuate its elegance and sophistication further.

Hindu mythology symbols, including the conch shell, disc, lotus, trident, drum, thunderbolt, and swans, have been painted in red cement to decorate the corridor leading to the temple entrance.

Main gateway: According to Hindu scriptures, the elephant, the bull, the lion, and the garuda are the respective carriers of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu, and they are all shown on both sides of the temple's main entrance.

A set of wide steps leading to the main temple's entrance give the structure a feeling of modernity. The design leaves you mesmerized as you walk through the Math.

Nat Mandir: A stunning statue of Lord Ganesh, masterfully sculpted out of a lovely blend of brass and copper, sits immediately above the Nat Mandir or prayer hall. White marble stone and brown kumri range stone, which contrast, have been used to decorate the prayer hall's floor.

The lotus petals etched from massive copper plates have been elegantly set on the floor, lending a holy feel. A huge chandelier with about 256 lights set up in three tiers hangs from the center of the prayer hall's dome-shaped ceiling made of wood. Two spherical beams that hang portraits of Sri Rama Krishna's direct disciples support the inner dome.

Sanctum Santorum: The innermost room of the temple, the Garbha Griha or Sanctum Santorum, has nine domes. The idols of Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda have been installed within the Garbha Griha and are regularly worshipped there.

The canopy is attached to a wooden frame that features elaborate carvings of a swan, lotus, a little drum, and a trident on the top. Under this canopy, the "Holy Trinity" is positioned on their marble pedestals, each with a lotus flower engraved into the wood. The main dome, a reflection of Islamic design, is intricately finished with rich zari to contribute to its splendor.

History of Sri Ramakrishna Math in Lucknow

The Ramakrishna Math, which towers over the verdant garden area, will surely wow you with grandeur. You can see the idols of the gods right from the side of the road, which fills you with unexplained peace.

The Indian guru Swami Vivekananda committed his life to spread the word of his master Sri Ramakrishna in the latter half of the nineteenth century. This is when the Ramakrishna Math, Lucknow, was first established. It opened to the public on February 2nd, 1987, in Lucknow.

The branch centers in the Northern zone were initially established in the holy cities of Vrindavan and Varanasi. Lucknow quickly followed suit by establishing a center there under the direction of Sarat Chandra Bandhopadhyaya.

#Trivia: An all-monk institution with the mission statement "For one's salvation, and for the welfare of the world," the Ramakrishna Math is devoted to Sri Ramakrishna.

The center originally operated out of the Aminabad neighborhood. But it was later relocated after the then-chief minister Chandrabhanu Gupta granted the monks permission to use a portion of his land after being moved by their efforts to benefit humanity.
